In a fast-growing company, there is an “emotional monster” inside every leader. Graham also named it Bob, which represents all the emotions and insecurities that can keep a person from performing at their best at work.

It’s there whether you like it or not, so you need to befriend these emotional monsters and manage it. In a rapidly expanding startup, your priority is not to let the emotional monster eat you.

At any given moment, ask yourself: Is your monster in good control, just biting your toes and smiling at you? Or start eating your whole being? Once your emotions control you, you lose to Bob.

How to get Bob to listen to you?

Here are three guiding principles:

1. Observe, but don’t act

Emotions don’t provide any clues or suggestions for your behavior, so watch until you know what’s real before acting on it.

“I can definitely say that all the biggest mistakes I’ve made and the things I regret the most were when Bob was at the helm,” Graham said. Acting on impulse is never good.
